Colbert Report tonight

Colbert had General Motors' vice chairman Robert Lutz on tonight discussing the Chevy Volt. The vice chairman said that he agrees with the 32,000 scientists that still do not agree on whether or not CO2 emissions are causing global warming.

32,000 sociologists probably...
That's a science... I guess...

Also, at $40,000 the Volt isn't going to be a realistic alternative. Add in the cost of battery replacement after 10 years, and you're looking at a very huge cost.

If gas is $6 per gallon, and your car averages 30 miles per gallon, that's 0.2 dollars or 20 cents per mile. In the interview, Lutz quoted that electricity comes to be 7 to 8 cents per mile. A difference of 13 cents per mile.

If you bought a subcompact for $20,000, it would take 153,846 miles for the Volt to make up the $20k difference. Assuming a 10k mile per year usage, that's 15 years before you'd see any savings. Remember that this doesn't take into account the price of batteries at the 10 year mark.

And that's still assuming you never go over 40 miles per charge on the Volt to avoid using the gas engine, ever.

I think he is in denial. I would like to hear what he feels are the reasons why the earth is getting warmer.
